Careem, UBER’s main competitor in the middle east, announced today April 23rd 2018 a massive security breach affecting 14 million users and captains data.

Here is what you need to know from the announcement:

• Breach occurred more than three months ago, precisely on January 14th.
• If you signed up after that date, your data is supposedly safe.
• Careem announced: “On January 14th of this year, online criminals gained access to our computer systems which hold customer and captain account data.”
• “No evidence” that credit card info were stolen. However, the announcement made it clear that personal information including customers’ name, email address, phone number and trip data!

Following the incident, Careem provided customers with the below tips:

• Implement good password management by updating your Careem password, as well as other accounts on which you use similar details. Use a strong mix of characters, and try not to use the same password for multiple sites.
• Remain cautious of any unsolicited communications that ask for personal information or refer to a web page asking for personal information
• Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unfamiliar emails
• Continue to review bank account and credit card statements for suspicious activity – if you see anything unexpected, call your bank

Careem will begin testing a delivery capability for RoundMenu customers on a small scale later this month.

Careem annouced today Sunday the acquisition of RoundMenu, the Dubai-based restaurant listing platform, for undisclosed sum.
